What it means is, how are the leaders learning from their experiences to experiment more and meaningfully, with their perspectives, outlook and skills to deliver expectations for the future.
Have these experiences been codified into ‘Rules of Thumb’.
Are these rules of thumb based on a narrow set of exposure or a broad range of experiences? Have these experiences been periodically tested for their relevance through a ‘Shelf-life Filter’? Are we reframing these experiences in the light of new knowledge
and situational awareness? Are we seeking experiences that test our past knowledge?
Development of a competency is a journey of ‘Macro Skill’ manifested through a series of structurally designed ‘Micro Skills’. Let us understand this concept through how swimming is learnt. How a swimming instructor on day one, initiates a non-swimmer into swimming,
by first making him/her walk around the swimming pool, feel the water near the edge, move the feet by holding the edge of the swimming pool, followed by swimming with the help of a float, then the movement of hand; breathing exercise and so on and so forth.
Similarly, the complex leadership competencies can be instilled in an incremental manner, one after the other. By adopting such an approach, the learner is insulated from the overwhelming impact of a bigger goal and is kept enthused in progressing one immediate learning milestone at a time.
